  • Visual Adventures in the Library

    Funded Dec 20, 2024

The decals, pillows and other items you donated have helped to transform the library into the cozy place we want it to be. Students just love to be here. They come to study, socialize, play games and get away from the bustle of the rest of the school.

The new books lining the shelves invite students to read, not only for academic advancement, but for pleasure, which is surprisingly, an important indicator for later success.

When students come in, the look on their faces when they see the latest book they have been looking for is priceless. Thank you for helping to make this space a special place for students to come and feel like they are a part of a larger and inclusive community.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Brown

  • Sweet and Salty Snacks for Study

    Funded Nov 15, 2024

Between finals week, regents examinations, and the stress and toil that comes along with those moments, thanks to you students burst through the library doors as a place of refuge, quiet, comfort and calm. The snacks you provided make all the difference to a kid who has forgotten to eat breakfast because they are totally distracted by the academic pressures.

Students are thrilled when I open a snack box and shake some bard out on the table for them to enjoy. The library volunteers who come in during their free time to shelve books or make a display look forward to making popcorn and having some tea while they work.

This would not be possible without people who care and can envision how their donations might make a change in a students' life.”

  • Digital Access Towards Information Equity: E-books Are the Answer

    Funded Jun 15, 2023

My students can now access ebooks and read them in a way that best approximates the experience of reading a paper book. This is a fantastic benefit because they are more willing to try to access the Citywide Digital Library and all of its offerings (a much larger collection than our small library could ever offer in print alone).

The first day they arrived, I had students working to charge the kindles and process them in the computers. They needed to connect to our wifi and figure out how to set up an account that they could access. It was a big job but well worth their time.

There is one student in particular who emailed me each day in early September to inquire as to when the kindles would be coming in (their shipping was initially cancelled so we didn't receive them until a few weeks ago, instead of over the summer). As soon as they were in, she was the first to help out with getting them set up.

Thank you so much for helping us offer this amazing service to our students.”

  • Collaborative Reading and Self-Reflection

    Funded Apr 26, 2023

Students have been able to walk into the library and sit down together to read. Sometimes they read aloud to each other and sometimes they simply sit quietly together. Adolescents need social interactions away from their screens and sometimes the library is a good place for them to get this.

On any given day a student will happen upon the collaborative reading section and ask if they can borrow a book. I will tell them that, actually, they can have it if they can find someone else to read it with (although even if they can's they ultimately can take the book). When they do find a fellow student or two, I ask them if they would consider writing a bookmark review when they are done reading to stick into the additional copies we have.

The new 9th grade class seems to be particularly fond of the library this year and the seniors are also gravitating back. It's always amazing to see the groups that will read together. Thank you so much for your gift to them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Brown
