Maya Angelo wrote, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” My goals are to help my students feel special and empower them to overcome their reading difficulties. I also want to help them develop a deep love for reading so they will become lifelong learners. Research has found that children learn to read by increasing their time reading, therefore developing confidence, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension skills. Research also supports the power of providing choice for striving readers. A wide variety of texts are needed so they will find a “just right” book in our classroom library. The majority of my students come from homes without books and in which their parents only speak in their native language, so it is vitally important that they can read self-selected books independently. Students will choose from a variety of books that will allow them to practice reading at their independent level. Students carefully take books home in plastic bags and care for them as the treasures they are. The brain loves novelty and I can picture the excitement of my students when I bring out the Wipe and Write answer boards. These will be used in all sorts of classroom discussions, games and other activities giving kiddos a fun way to reveal their answers—without shouting! They will allow me to see students’ work in a fun engaging way.
