Author Study Books for English Language Learners
Funded Mar 27, 2018The giggles of excitement and anticipation could be heard all around the room today as I walked into the classroom of my first grade English Language Learners with the boxes of books I received from your generosity to us through Donor's Choose.
As I opened each box and showed my students the books inside and told them a little about each one they could barely contain their excitement. They were thrilled to see books by familiar authors such as Ezra Jack Keats and Mo Willems. As I took "Whistle for Willie" by Ezra Jack Keats out of the box my students immediately recognized the authors name, title and artwork on the cover from the other stories we have read by this author. They asked me questions like, "Is Peter in this story too?" and "Is Peter going to have a problem in this story like he did in the other stories?"
Thank you for helping me to foster this interest and love of reading in my first grade students. In reading books by familiar authors my students are able to make connections to the characters and settings as well as connections between books by the same author. It piques their interest and allows them to talk about and interact with the book. Part of the job of teaching young students reading is to motivate and excite them to want to read . The addition of these books to our classroom has been a wonderful motivator for my students. Every day they look forward to being read one of these books and being able to connect, interact and talk about it”

Funded Feb 10, 2018Thank you so very much for the kindness and generosity you showed to us! My first grade English Language Learners were so excited to open the box of new center games. We are not only learning how to use these games, but also how to work together, share and take turns. All of my students are also practicing how to be respectful and responsible as we take care of all of the pieces when we use these games, when we clean up and when we put them away.
During our learning center time my students work in small groups where they are speaking and listening to one another as well as learning needed English language reading skills. So far the favorite center seems to be the rhyming center. Some of my learners are even coming up with rhymes of their own! Our reading is also improving because of the sight word learning center. My students are starting to read the words they see frequently as well as use them in their daily writing journals.
Most importantly, thank you for showing my students that you care about them and that their learning is important to you!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Silano
