In my 5th grade classroom, we encourage collaboration and teamwork using the IB attributes, cooperative learning, structures and classroom community building activities. To promote this flexible working environment, I have begun to incorporate more seating options for students. The kids love having the choice of different seating options and are able to find what works for them. Their physical needs are met by being able to choose seats that are comfortable for them. They are also able to choose seating on the floor to work at our low tables, sit in the bungee chairs, or choose standing tables where the Urban Mod 24 inch tall stools will be well used. The options are endless! I have found that students work better when given various seating options and the ability to move around freely. I have a few bungee chairs, couches and yoga balls in my classroom already, and I have found that they are class favorites along with sitting on the floor or standing at tables, along with a comfortable rug/cushions for floor work, my class will be even more successful this coming year! The exercise ball chairs will require the students to engage their core and allow my students to get some of their excess energy out while still being productive at their work station. Kids are expected to sit for longer and play less than ever before, so I want to give them opportunities to move as often as possible! Lastly, the Wobble cushions are going to make students more comfortable when they sit at the low tables! The floor is carpeted, but can still be rather uncomfortable, so I want to make the area more inviting for them!
