My school is 88% English Language Learners (ELL), meaning that 88% of students come from houses where little or no English is spoken. 17 of the 20 students in my class come from families that speak Arabic, Spanish, or another foreign language. Many of them have no family members that speak English. 100% of students at this school live at or below the poverty line. Because of this, many students do not have access to books at home. It is my job to make sure that all the 20 students in my 1st Grade class not only learn to speak in English, but learn to read and write in English as well. To do this, they need plenty of books to read every day.
