  • Say Cheese to NO Bullying!

    Funded Feb 21, 2012

Thank you for your continuous donations to support our class project, Say Cheese to NO Bullying! The camera and books on bullying have been a wonderful addition to our classroom. The children and I are so grateful for your donations.

We now have enough copies of the book, "Bullying in Schools", for each student to have its own copy. The children are continuing to enjoy the stories in the books. They love to have the opportunity to discuss each situation with their classmates. The knowledge on this important topic has expanded and they feel more confident to speak up to bullies in or our of the classroom.

The children are working in cooperative groups and writing plans on how to handle different bullying situations from the stories they have read and encounters they have witnessed in school. After they children wrote their plans, they acted out the scenes with their group. It is such a joy to hear the children laugh and giggle and they become young actors. It is amazing to see as a teacher how many of my students never have had the opportunity to use a camera. They were so eager to get their hands on the camera and take pictures or videos for the first time. They are also enjoying to take snap shots or videos on their scripts about bullying.

My students' confidence has improved by using the resources you donated to our classroom. They are enjoying to watch themselves in action and share their videos with other classrooms. Their published work is spreading the word throughout the school. The camera has inspired my students to become authors and directors on the subject of bullying. Thank you very much for giving my students this wonderful opportunity. ”

  • Nook Away Bullies

    Funded Feb 24, 2012

Thank you very much for your generous donations towards our class project, Nook Away Bullies. The tablet and books on bullying are an asset to our classroom. The students can now build their confidence and therefore speak up to bullying.

This is our second project asking for a Nook Tablet. Unfortunately, I found that the Nooks were not easily accessible to my students and therefore would not benefit from them. Best Buys was generous enough to let me exchange the Nook and a credit for something that would be more useful for my students. They permitted me to exchange it for and iPad. I chose this option because this device has many free applications that will improve my students reading fluency. That was the main purpose of this class project.

The iPad is being used by my struggling readers by playing instructional games that improve fluency. They are so eager to play these educational games that they don't want to go out and play. Their reading has improved because they are highly motivated to read on the iPad. The are not only playing, but then they choose to read some of the books that I have download for them. The cost of the books are much more cost effective than the Nook. It was a positive choice to change the device. The students are continuing to learn about the different types of bullying that is occurring in our school system. Now that they have strong knowledge about bullying they are able to stand up to bullies.

The students now have more confidence with reading. They feel successful in the classroom. The children now feel more confident and speak up to any student that puts them down. We all thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your donations. Thank you!”

  • Nook Away Bullies, Completed!

    Funded Feb 21, 2012

Thank you very much for your generous contribution towards out class project, Nook Away Bullies, Complete!. The tablet and "Bullying in Schools" is a great asset. The students are continuing to learn about this important topic facing our nation.

When we received the two Nooks, the students had a difficult time using it. In addition, I couldn't afford to buy them stories to download and enjoy. I called Quill and they were very generous to exchange the Nooks to something more accessible to the students. They advised me that the Samsung Tablet is easier for children to use and that I will have more access to inexpensive books online through various applications. So the children and I discussed the pros and cons and they voted on exchanging the Nooks for the Tablet. It was a great decision. The tablet was more kid friendly and they like to use it.

My struggling students are excited to pick up the tablet and read the books that I downloaded on it. It's like they race to use it. They want to stay in at recess and use it instead of going outside to play. The students are improving their fluency because they are doing so much reading on the tablet. They now have a choice on how and what to read. Not only was I able to provide them with books on the tablet but I was able to provide them educational applications that helps them improve their reading skills. What an accomplishment.

The children now have confidence in reading and therefore feel safe in the classroom. The tablet has provided my students access to thrive in the classroom. They now feel safe and will not be put down because they are not fluent readers. Thank you for providing my students with this opportunity to succeed in reading.”

The students come from a mostly lower socioeconomic demographic, and many do not speak English at home. Our school does its best to inspire the kids and bring the curriculum to life. But the challenges of limited budgets and language barriers make that mission difficult.
