Operation Montserrat e-Mission: Simulating Careers in Volcanology, Meteorology and Evacuation
Funded Jul 20, 2017My students and I cannot thank you enough for your generosity. Because of your gifts, we were able to successfully complete six distance learning projects with NASA's Challenger Learning Center. All in all, over 120 students received a unique opportunity to simulate a science career in rescue operations, volcanology or meteorology. Moreover, students were given an outlet to think and act on a global level by studying geological and geographical features, demographics, and natural disasters in the Caribbean region.
News of this project reached many miles beyond our classroom walls through various media sources. Numerous leaders from Marion School District visited during the activity and were impressed with the students' higher level thinking, collaboration and creativity; as a result, a video of student interviews was posted on our district YouTube Channel, Facebook and Instagram. Our local newspaper covered the story and published pictures and articles promoting our students' success. News stations from the state of Arkansas featured our project's positive impact upon student learning through television broadcasting. Finally, Arkansas Department of Education featured the distance learning piece in a mass email to state educators and professionals.
Without a doubt, students and educators engaged in a great deal of reflection at the project's completion. All were astounded at their success to work as a team with others while simulating a "stressful, pressure-filled" career. NASA representatives further elaborated on each of the six projects' successes; all residents in the Caribbean were rescued safely during the simulations and Marion Junior High School Students performed hurricane and volcanic calculations with great accuracy.
Ultimately, it is our collective desire to complete another distance learning project this school year. Again, we thank you for being a source of inspiration and support!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Adkins
