This Little Piggy Needs Some Supplies!
Funded Aug 2, 2023Thank you so much for your support! The guinea pig supplies are greatly appreciated. I fund supplies for the guinea pigs myself, so I'm always so excited and appreciative of donations! It takes a lot of hay, food and treats for these little piggies!
My guinea pigs are such an asset to my counseling program. Students feel more comfortable talking to me about issues when they are holding one of the pigs. Many times I partner with teachers for using time with the guinea pigs as a reward. The older students will save their ClassDojo points (online reward system) to spend time with them. Students that are struggling with behavior issues can earn time with the pigs when they make positive choices. The guinea pigs make the counselors office less intimidating to them.”

This classroom project was brought to life by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and one other donor.Extra, Extra, Read All About It!
Funded Feb 22, 2023Thank you so much for your support! These books are a wonderful addition to my counseling library. I needed resources to help me get through to some of my students that are struggling with behavioral issues both at home and at school.
After reading "I Have Ants in My Pants!" with one of my students, I could see the beginning of some different thought patterns. I can't wait to see the impact this book and others that I received will have on my struggling students. I have had great classroom lessons and individual student support while using books from this author. I try to add her books to my library whenever possible.”

One thing I've started doing is having different themed cages whenever possible. The pumpkin house will be a great hit in the fall and the log chew tunnel can be used any time. All of the students love to see the new cage setup when I change things out! It's also good for the pigs because they get bored if they have the same thing all of the time.”

Extra Extra, Read All About It!
Funded Dec 31, 2020The books that I have received from your donation have been a great addition to my counseling library. Most students love to be read to and I have found that they identify well with a book that speaks to what the student is going through at the moment. Depending on the situation, most of the books that I have deal with the topic in a humorous or endearing manner which they love.
When I use a book in the classroom or with an individual student in my office, first I read the book to the student(s). Then we discuss the story and what the characters learned or what actions they took. Lastly, we discuss how they can apply those same concepts to their life or situation.
This school year I seem to have more students dealing with fear, worry or anxiety. I have been working with two different students on developing a growth mindset. Each student is afraid to try new things because they are afraid they will do it wrong, not do it as well as a classmate or sibling or can't do it at all. The books that I received from your donation have been a great asset in working with these students.”

Learning on the Go!
Funded Dec 19, 2019My students were so excited to see me roll in with my yellow three tiered cart. Many of them exclaimed "What's that?". They now affectionately know it as Mrs. Barnhardt's "Happy Wagon". When they see me with it, they know I'm headed to someone's class to teach a guidance lesson. One day I went to a teacher's room to ask her a question. A student asked where my happy wagon was. I told her I wasn't there for a lesson at that time.
I use the three tiered cart every day to take supplies for lessons to each individual classroom. Since I teach lessons in the teacher's classroom, I have to always take my own resources needed for my lesson. The cart has made it so much easier to transport materials and I can also take more than I used to. The essentials I also received with the cart are super useful. I use the fabric storage bins to take as many supplies to the classrooms as possible. Pencils are obviously needed everyday for any activity. You can never have too many pencils at an elementary school! With one of my classrooms, I will be doing a series of lessons with the students. The students will be using the pocket folders to organize their materials for this series. The timers are being used for any group activity that has a time limit.
I have lots of fun lessons planned for the remainder of the year. Some of our topics include courage, kindness, and safety. The "Happy Wagon" and other supplies will get lots of miles this year and for years to come.”

What's Driving Your Bus?
Funded Nov 6, 2015Thank you again for your donation to our Energy Bus project! The kids were so surprised and amazed at the resources that we received.
Starting in January and going through March, we did guidance lessons based on the Energy Bus rules. Students would work in their Energy Bus journals each time that we met. I think the most rewarding activity was when students set short term and long term goals for themselves. Some examples of their goals are: turning in homework on time, getting and A+ on science fair project, becoming a veterinarian and becoming a chiropractor.
Thank you again for your generosity!”

This Little Piggie Needs Some Help!
Funded Sep 8, 2015Thank you so much for your donation to my counseling program! My students are so excited and amazed by all of the materials that we received. The kids asked what each of the items was used for. They asked "Why did you get him a pink brush?" How funny. I told them that was the only option.
Almost every day, I have a student brush the guinea pig. This is a soothing activity for the students that may be upset or having a bad day. It also helps them to relax and be more willing to open up and talk. The students love to feed him too. This reinforces caring and gives them a sense of responsibility.
By receiving all of these supplies, I'm able to reinforce many of the character traits that we discuss in our counseling lessons. Students have to cooperate by taking turns helping with the guinea pig. They have to use self-control by being gentle when handling him. They have lots of responsibility by caring for him. This is just a few of the many ideas I have!
Thank you again so much for your donation!”

Mrs. Barnhardt
