The Fine Arts Department will be bringing artist Gary Gresko to the school to complete a 4 day artist in residency program with our 4th, 6th-8th grade students. The Fine Arts Department will use these tools and materials to create a series of cement geometric sculptures to accent a math themed garden and to provide students with a hands on art making experience. During this program the students will have the opportunity to journey through the process of working with and working like a professional artist. This program will give them an opportunity to learn about Mr. Gresko and his experience as a professional artist and the artists who have inspired him, to learn about the processes and tools associated with cement sculpture and to reflect on the works they have completed. By the end of the project about 150 students will each have between 5-15 hours of hands on experience with creating sculptures out of cement. In addition, students will have completed pieces of public art that will be on display here for years to come. Mr. Gresko will collaborate with the students and the art department in the construction of 6 geometric cement sculptures for the math themed garden. These pieces will be mounted to cement bases permanently by the school. These materials and tools will make this project possible. We are confident in Mr. Gresko's ability to work with students of this age in a meaningful way because this will be his third project with the students. In 2005, Mr. Gresko collaborated with the students to create a Katrina Memorial sculpture. In 2011 Mr. Gresko came to the school and worked with the 4th, 6th-8th grade students in metal sculpture. We are seeking funding to pay for materials and tools.
