My Body Engine Needs Tools

Funded Jul 2, 2018

I wanted to express to you how much your generosity has impacted the students in my program. Our sensory room has been transformed into a sanctuary space students can use to adjust their body engine. This room is used on a daily basis by 12 students who use the equipment according to a sensory diet developed specifically to meet their needs. The other 8 students use the room when they feel the need to make an adjustment either to raise their engine or lower their engine. The students are benefiting by having the actual equipment prescribed to meet their needs.

On the first day of school, when the students arrived and entered the sensory room, their eyes lit up with excitement. Gone was the cold stark room and in it's place was a warm, calm, inviting space ready for their use. As small groups we sat in the room and took in all of the new and exciting pieces. The students are mesmerized by the bubble lamp and love to hide in the body sox. The light from the fiber optic light gives the perfect soft light needed in a sensory room. The students love to touch the strands and let them run through their fingers. When someone is having a tough day, hiding under the large weighted blanket provides the much needed sense of security. Everything purchased makes a difference in the lives of these kids everyday.

You generous donation of the more expensive sensory pieces inspired my administration to purchase a few final pieces to add the finishing touches to the room. They purchased a large piece of carpet and a trampoline to complete the room. The next step for our sensory room will to purchase a "squeeze machine." This "machine" is based on the research and design of Temple Grandin. We are off to a great start all because of you! I am forever grateful!”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Ross
