Quesque Consequat- Let's Read
Funded Jan 5, 2012Quesque Consequat - Let's Read, is a club for students at our school who wish to learn to read Latin. The club meets once a week at 7:00 AM and continues until 7:50 AM, when the school day officially begins.
Ours is a Title One school. This means the students can come to school between 6:30 AM and 7:45 AM to receive free breakfast. The student members of "Let's Read" arrive at school extra early so they will be able to practice reading the Latin lessons and popular stories in Latin. These fifth grade students are dedicated! They took the curriculum from the Latin club and turned it into a play. They use the oral reading exercises in the curriculum "Minimus" to develop their fluency. Each week new material is presented to the students and they decide how to incorporate it into the activities within the Vox Populi, Readers Theater and Let's Read clubs. They have so much fun reading the Latin version of Cat In the Hat, Winnie The Pooh and various Fairy Tales, that they voluntarily do extra home work to prepare for their class each week.
The students have benefited greatly from the curriculum that was purchased. Each student has expanded his or her appreciation of literature and foreign language. Many have become interested in stories that were written in other languages; exposing themselves to a greater view of a world that is available through appreciation of language and culture.

Ours is a Title One school. This means the students can come to school between 6:30 AM and 7:45 AM to receive free breakfast. The student members of Readers Theater arrive at school extra early so they will be able to practice lines in the Latin lessons that they convert to plays. These fifth grade students are dedicated! They took the curriculum from the Latin club and turned it into a play. Originally I'd planed to introduce new material for the classroom plays but the students were having so much fun with the characters from the Latin stories, they asked to put on a "Roman Theater" performance.
The students have benefited from the use of the document camera. The class can use the limited print materials with this device to learn lines and put on their play.
We thank you!

Funded Dec 16, 2011VOX POPULI is a club for students at our school who wish to learn about Roman history, culture and language. The club meets 3 days a week at 7:00 AM and continues until 7:50 AM, when the school day officially begins.
Ours is a Title One school. This means the students can come to school between 6:30 AM and 7:45 AM to receive free breakfast. The student members of VOX POPULI, arrive at school extra early so they will be able to eat and participate in the Latin lessons. They conduct research in their free time and complete their Latin homework in addition to their daily homework. These fifth grade students are dedicated! They are vibrant, asking questions, reading ahead in the curriculum and using the Latin vocabulary from the stories they have read. The projector makes the class and the club possible.
The children who joined the club were eager learners from the start. The exposure to the history and culture of the Latin language has elevated their thirst for knowledge. They have made the connection between English and Latin and were eager to discover Latin words that are used in everyday language. The native, Spanish speaking students were ecstatic when they learned that the modern language they speak at home descends from ancient Latin.
All this excitement over learning Latin has spilled over to other areas of studies. Students act as though they were college scholars. Schools throughout California have begun taking their standardized test and there is no doubt that the learning experiences garnered from participation in VOX POPLI, "Voice of the People", will help the participants a great deal.
