  • Going Mirrorless in Photojournalism

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

What a great surprise to start the school year! I can’t wait to tell our hard working journalists they have a new camera to work with this year. You’ve given the tools they need to learn the professional skills they need to create media that serves their student body. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Balmeo

  • Capturing the Action

    Funded Oct 17, 2022

WOW! We are so excited to get this new equipment. This staff is checking out photography equipment daily, covering pep assemblies, football and soccer games, and capturing student life. This will be a huge help to their creative process. Thank you, thank you for supporting scholastic journalists here in Oregon!”

  • A Student Photojournalist's Dream Camera Setup

    Funded Feb 17, 2022

I continue to be in awe of the generosity of others. In my student media program, we've become accustomed to doing more with less, so it feels pretty special when someone we don't even know says, "Hey, I think what you're doing is meaningful, and I'm going to support it."

Thank you for your kindness, but more importantly, for your faith that the work they are doing is important, that we're building not only journalists, but people who will in turn be better thinkers, writers and members of society.

My students impress me every day with their eagerness to learn, their willingness to take risks, and the ends to which they'll go to do the job right. But they can't do what they do without the tools to do it, so thank YOU for giving them the tools.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Balmeo

  • Suped-Up Studio Setup

    Funded Sep 24, 2021

Once again, I'd like to thank you for your donation to my class. Our yearbook and journalism students have been using their photo studio setup daily, and my only wish is that I could get out of my classroom a little more -- they're always in there!

Recently, a yearbook student used the light setup to execute her creative vision, taking portraits of student musicians on campus. Another two yearbook students used the studio setup to photograph their peers for a fashion spread. A couple journalism students also used the studio recently to take portraits of student athletes. It really is being used daily!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Balmeo

  • Getting the Shots

    Funded Jul 20, 2021

It's been a little while since we were able to purchase this camera to use with a lens that was gifted to us, and I do believe it's my kid's absolute favorite! It's quiet and fast and super simple. Many, many yearbook photos have been captured using it already, and we're just getting started.

Thank you, as always, for supporting these student storytellers who want to capture those pivotal moments in this most unusual year. When they're holding great equipment, they feel powerful and necessary -- which they absolutely are -- and you helped make that happen.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Balmeo

  • Making Writing Strategic

    Funded Aug 13, 2021

If there is one book I think should be put into the hands of every future journalist (or heck, any type of writer), it's Roy Peter Clark's. I've bought so many copies of this book to give to friends, colleagues, graduating editors, to hand out as prizes... I really do think it's the BEST for quick tips that make sense. That's why I wanted it for my current students, and that's why I'm so grateful your helped me make that happen.

As I said before, the generosity of the people I know and lone (and the people I DON'T know!) always blows me away. Thank you for helping me teach the best way I know how with the best tools (pun very intended) available.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Balmeo

  • Journalism Tools for a Digital First Newsroom

    Funded Sep 7, 2018

Thank you so much for supporting this project. Over the past three years (not counting the Covid year!), we have been building a library of equipment to do high-quality photojournalism and multimedia, quite literally, one piece at a time. Each lens or camera we add is another moment captured, another student learning the power of visual storytelling.

This equipment is just one piece of a multi-year plan not just to "take good photos" and "do multimedia" but to really invest in and build a program to survive long-term. For a hundred years, there was a legacy of history-recording journalism at Albany's high schools, and slowly we a rebuilding it to that.

Thank you for giving just a little to help make that happen. We appreciate you!”

    With gratitude,

This Nikon camera kit will be used almost daily as journalism students check it out to cover pep assemblies, sports events, academic activities, plays and concerts, and so much more that happens on our campus of 1300+. Photo journalism is essential to producing a high-quality student publication. Visual storytelling and marrying the written word with images and design are all part of learning how to tell a more compelling story. This camera kit will help my students to achieve that. In particular, this camera also allows students to send images through a wi-fi network, which will allow them to use it for live coverage. It also has an external microphone jack, which is a must for capturing audio interviews with video. It's an all-around good fit for what we need.
