  • Equity Practiced by Drawing Orphans from Africa in Distance Learning!!

    Funded Dec 22, 2020

Thank you for supporting drawing orphans and refugees in Africa in distance learning. I am determined to keep this project of drawing orphans alive even in distance learning as we have done this project for over 7 years. Drawing orphans in Africa fits into the curriculum we are studying right now of African art and African American art. Students have been studying African textile patterns and will combine this with the orphan portraits for orphans in Cameroon. Thank you for supporting this project.

The African American students in my class feel included and all the students are learning about what African American artists and African artist have contributed with their art.

I am excited to start this project as students drawing an African orphan will become very familiar and connected as well.

Thank you for your generous support in this challenging time for everyone.”

  • BLM Face Masks from Students' Drawings!

    Funded Dec 5, 2020

Thank you for funding the BLM face masks from students drawings. All students had their drawings made into real masks and they are picking them up at the school right now. I have only heard good things about their masks from parents, students and administrators at the school. The district featured the face masks in their Friday letter to all parents and personnel at this district. They were impressed that in distance learning still there are innovative projects being made about current events that include all students.

Thank you for including all students in the art program with your support of this grant.”

  • Equity Equally Practiced Creating BLM themed Masks!

    Funded Dec 21, 2020

Thank you for helping fund "Black Live Matters" themed masks and drawings. This had a lot of meaning and support for the African American students in the class that are watching what is going on in the world. They did feel like they were getting a voice in the art curriculum and their concerns and what they are going through could be part of their art projects.

The masks that were made from their drawings turned out beautiful and they appreciated not having to pay for them as they really could not have afforded to pay for them. This was an enriching project that made distance learning exciting and relevant for my students.”

  • Creating African Textile Paper Collages & Learning Their History.

    Funded Dec 2, 2020

Thank you for your help in funding "Creating African Textile Paper Collages & learning their history" When students return next week in 2021 we will start a unit on African American art and African art for black history month lasting for 8 weeks. We will draw orphans from Cameroon and now be able to make collages with actual African textile pattern thanks to your generosity in funding this project. I am getting the materials together with scissor and glue for students to pick up at school once the new school year starts.

This will add another dimension to their studies other than just digital projects. Students will be learning about the history of African art by using it in their own art.

Thank you again for helping to make this possible for students at this title one school that would not otherwise be able to participate in an enriching project learning about the history of African American and African art. Very exciting though I have no pictures of students to share as we are in distance learning only.”

  • Coloring Cameroon Orphan Portraits with Multicultural Color Pencil Sets

    Funded Nov 23, 2020

Thank you for funding multi-cultural color pencils for my students to draw people of color from Cameroon when they draw their orphan portraits with The Memory Project.

Students have drawn orphans from Venezuela and Syria this year and drawing orphans from Cameroon will round out this unit of drawing people. Students will each get a set of the multicultural pencils that they will pick up at school since we are in distance learning 100% since March. This will make this third orphan project more meaningful to them as they are getting the tools to make the portrait more like the person.

I was being told by students in the previous portraits that they didn't have the skin colors they needed. Before they start on the portrait they complete a skin color worksheet. It's important the portrait looks as much like the orphan as possible.

Thank you for helping fund this much needed set of tools each student will receive and needs.”

  • We Vote Face Masks Made from Drawings Designed by Students!

    Funded Oct 28, 2020

Thank you for funding actual cloth face masks printed with students art. I am trying to get each one of my 150 art and digital art students a mask of their art through Donors Choose funding and Artsonia funding 20% of the submitted masks. The actual masks will be made and delivered by the end of this semester and holiday break so hopefully students will wear them whenever they are out. This area has the highest rate of infection primarily because there are many essential workers and many mulit-generation families in one household.

Students are getting their masks done ahead of the due date because they are so excited to be making them. We are following the voting results and seeing how voting does matter. Students are making many preliminary drawings for their masks. Thank you for supporting students making masks about "wevote" theme. Such a great project and a timely one making face masks during the pandemic. Thank you for your help to make the project happen for my students.”

  • WeVote Face Masks Printed with Student Art in Distance Learning!

    Funded Nov 9, 2020

Thank you for funding this wonderful project. Students have taken the first step and have been drawing their feelings about "voting". Students are off for a week but when they get back they will research more about the history of voting and what "we vote" means.

After that they will finish drawing their masks and they will be submitted to Artsonia by December 10th so they can print the drawings on cloth from the template each student submits.

Students are asking me when are they going to get their masks. They are very excited to have this opportunity to make something for themselves to use that they are very proud of. Very special project for students at this title one school to be able to do thanks to your generosity in getting this so quickly funded for the holidays too.”

  • Practicing "BLM" with Drawing Portraits of Orphans in Cameroon!

    Funded Nov 9, 2020

Thank you for support ing drawing orphans from Cameroon so students will be able to draw them and learn about their lives, history and culture of life in Africa. This is year 10 of working with The Memory project, drawing orphans in different countries and it is most meaningful this year to be able to continue despite 100% distance learning, students not having technology of their own and not having the technology in the classroom that we would use with this project such as light boxes, assortments of colors for drawing portraits.

Thank you for your support of drawing orphans from Cameroon and supporting equity in the art classroom with drawing orphans of all races. Your donations made this possible as we would not be able to afford to participate in this project without donations.”

  • BLM/Equity Practiced by Drawing Orphans in Cameroon in Distance Learning!

    Funded Nov 13, 2020

Thank you for supporting students learning about an African country by drawing the orphans in Cameroon with The Memory Project. Students would not be able to do this during the pandemic without your support and this also supports The Memory Project which is struggling during the pandemic. We are learning about how the pandemic has affected Cameroon and students are connecting with orphans far away with their drawings. The Memory Project will make a video of the delivery and my students will see this before the end of the school year.

Being in 100% distance learning, it has been great to keep up this 10 year history of drawing orphans in different countries as a community/world service project with students art at this school. Thank you again for this support. It means a-lot to the African American students at my school (about 10%) to be connecting with students that look like them in Africa and it's also an opportunity for students to reach out to students that do no look like them and connecting with them with their art.”

  • "WEVOTE" Wearable Face masks made from Students Digital Drawings!

    Funded Oct 8, 2020

Students have been designing their face masks on Google drawing and now that the "voting" is over they are making the mask drawings. Students have been drawing about voting in their sketchbook and trying to combine those ideas on their masks. This is the early stages of this project and most aren't ready to be sent in to be printed.

I am waiting until everyone is done and then submitting the drawings to be made in actual masks. Thank you for supporting this great project for this title one school. Students will get the actual masks in about a month in time for the holidays. Very exciting to be able to have students use their art to make something they can use and should use in this pandemic. Thank you for helping to fund this project.”

I see 150 students a day, ages 11-14; boys & girls. Students are in the school uniform of white top and dark bottoms every day. Most students are clean, young, eager & happy. In return I feel I want to keep that purity and innocence and give them a strong art program with fun, exciting projects. I mix in math ; English, history with the art so they are becoming stronger creative thinkers with technology while learning some core subjects. They are "teenagers" and emotional. They are in the in between child and young adult. They are very impressionable and with most of my students working n clay, using watercolors, drawing on cloth, using iPads, using oil pastels; it's their first experience and they are really excited to try. Some come from not ideal home situations, some students are homeless, live in group homes, live with relatives and school is the one constant for them. At school they are all equals.
