Student-Led Project with Latest Technology
Funded Jan 17, 2016We just got our new iPad yesterday and we are learning how to use the split screen so we can look at a picture on one screen and draw with Sketchbook X-press on the other screen. The 2 iPad minis we have can't do that. It's fun to do this and learn how to do this on the new iPad min. It is faster than the other 2 iPad minis we have had since last school year. The camera seems to take better digital photographs. We take pictures of our art projects and upload them to Artsonia where we have our digital portfolios. I just uploaded my sketch for this week using the new iPad mini.
Thank you for encouraging myself and my classmates to learn new technology in the art room by funding our Donors Choose project. It is the only class at our school with iPads for almost every student. Now there is less wait to use an iPad. When I have the money I am going to get an iPad but for now I'll use the school iPad we just got from Donors Choose.
Thank you”

Funded Oct 29, 2015Having a 3d printer in the art room had added another dimension to the art program. We are using the latest technology combined with traditional technology (paint brush and pencil) for the best results. Exposing students to 3D printing has peaked their interest in what technology to can do and really opened up doors in their minds of what technology can do.
Especially having a new 3D printer in December when students are easily distracted with holidays, the 3D printer has refocused them on technology combined with art. Students are working on designs to print before the leave for winter break. We have the printer running in the art room for all 150 students to see though only the media art class is actually working on projects to print.
Thank you for funding a 3D printer for this class. Without the Donors Choose grant and your donations it would have been years since we had a chance to use a 3D printer. Not one student had seen a 3D printer before or new they actually existed. So thank you for giving these students this educational, creative, toy to use this holiday season.”

Fluent & Responsible, Native, Digital Citizens with steAm
Funded Oct 6, 2015We heard we had received the Donors Choose grant from Chevron on Monday, Tuesday the iPads were shipped and by the end of the week we had 2 new iPads and cases for students to use in each of the 6 classes I teach. Students are using them right now to learn about augmented reality and to create self portraits with the TypeDrawing app. They are learning about researching subjects, printing from iPads, photographing and uploading, writing statements about each of their art projects and using them to create, original art with the iPad drawing apps.
They learned about digital citizenship and they are practicing it on these 2 new iPads. IPads are shiny, bright toys that students can do some serious learning on quickly. They don't have technology at home but in this class there is a lot of technology for them to try thanks to Chevron.
Thank you for your support each year for this wonderful program (Fuel for Schools) for students and teachers. This program has funded technology that we would not otherwise have. The program has made a difference. Thank you very much!!”

Combining Art with Meaningful Community Service
Funded Mar 31, 2015Students have been drawing the orphans from Ghana the past two weeks and starting to finish them. When they are finished with art projects they upload them to Artsonia and write a statement. There statements about their drawings show they are thinking about the orphans they draw. Having to look at a face when you draw a person, you get to know them and wonder about them as you draw. I mat the pictures with the mats bought from this project and the pictures look so nice and finished. They are laminated as well. They will be exhibited in the county fair before we sent 8 selected pictures to the Ghana orphan. This is a busy time of year when the school year is wrapping up and it's great to do a project that has students calm down and reflect about someone in another country less fortunate then they are.
This project makes my curriculum fuller and richer and more rounded. Thank you for giving these students the chance to participate in the Memory Project. In turn the orphans in Ghana will get their hand drawn pictures from these students and they have someone that thought enough to draw them from another country. Kindness is given from these students to the students in Ghana. It's not just an assignment. The drawings are good and colorful. I have students give them colorful clothes in their drawings.”

Reading & Writing & Animating
Funded Feb 8, 2015I am very appreciative of the books and technology I received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for teacher development. I have used the books to learn about making movies on our computers, animations and digital art on the computer with Photoshop. Having my own iPad to work at home and practice really helped in the learning process.
I have been working with National Core Art Standards piloting the new media art standards for 8th grade and the timing of having these resources was crucial and very helpful. Students have been making a 2 minute art documentary using movie-maker. I think I have been able to help them more with what I have learned from reading the books and practicing movie making on the iPad with iMovie.”

Funded Feb 28, 2015Thank you for adding new technology to the art room. We had 6 drawing tablets but they were over 5 years old and barely working. The 4 new drawing tablets are the latest and best and work great. The animation class at this middle school use these every day with the animation program Flip-book.
I have another student that is a teachers assistant and every day he uses this for navigating his desktop. He combines the computer, tablet and scanner to make some really great art.
This is one technology that I would like to get for every computer and every student to use everyday. It's just the beginning as this digital art class grows thanks to your donation that is giving it a start and a test trial this year.”

Math + Art + iPads = Success
Funded Oct 14, 2014Thank you for your generous help bringing technology to the art room. What a difference iPads make and enrich the classroom. Our iPad library has been doubled thanks to Chevron and anonymous donors. Students use these every day and by the end of the day there maybe is 5% power left on each iPad.
Students are learning iPad photography, QR codes, writing and thinking about the art they create while using cropping tools, typing, editing, rotating tools and navigating through the world wide web.
Learning has become fun and students technology IQ's are growing ten fold each day.
Each 150 students photographs their art each week several times with the iPad and uploads the art creating their digital portfolio of their own art. They are very proud of their accomplishments and having the chance to use iPads every day is very meaningful to them. Without your donations this would not be happening in this room at this school. This is the only class in the school that has iPads that students can use every day. What a gift you have given them and it is so appreciated by me and the students.”

Funded Oct 23, 2014Thank you for giving the students at my school new sketchbooks to draw in every day, when they first come to class. Students "own" these drawings because they come entirely from their ideas, their minds and they are important to them. Now they have large sketchbooks to draw in and they will cut color paper and decorate the outsides of their sketchbooks. I choice these sketchbooks because they are plain on the outside and can be decorated. At the end of the semester or year, they are theirs to keep. What a gift for them you have funded with your generous donation. I thank you and they thank you. A blank book to fill and a mind to fill with guidance and encouragement.
There is no other class that students create in every day. A creative mind is a healthy, strong mind that will survive adversity with experience gained from using their minds creatively. Seeing what is not there. Seeing possibilities is what they are doing each day when a black page is filled with their ideas in their sketchbooks. Color, line, shapes, patterns, pencil, erasers, markers are the tools they can now use to fill their books you donated money towards. - 50 pages- will soon be filled with drawings and possibilities.”

Funded Sep 13, 2014Thank you for supporting our project of making portraits for orphans in different countries. With this donation of art materials we can start the project in the art classes, with good watercolor paper and have colorful results to send to the orphans. Students will learn about painting with watercolors, framing their artwork and also learn about students with less than they have in different countries. They will also learn about the country and how it is like to live there. This project validates art as an important medium to communicate with anyone, any age, any country and pretty much anytime.
Students see how art can be used to give someone their own age in a different country, a drawing of themselves to keep. I see as a teacher how much this means to the students here and we will see how much it means to the orphan in a different country in a couple of months when they send us the delivery video. I have students write about their art and this project that we can now afford to do with your donations, means a lot to them.
Thank you for supporting this project. It makes the art room a place of compassion, humanity, civility, sensitivity and creativity. And hopefully having been a part of this at a young age when they grow up they will remember being creative, sensitive, compassionate and be that.”

Funded Aug 24, 2014We got the iPad and case/stand yesterday. Quicker than I ever thought possible. It is being used in every class. The animation class has started making movies with iMovie on the iPad. The other 5 art classes use it to find images and sketch them in their sketchbooks. Having iPads has moved the art room into a whole new direction aligned with common core and getting students job ready/job skills.
I hope to write more grants and have more iPads so any student that wants to use the iPad can and better yet there are 8 table groups, I hope to have an iPad at every table group permanently. Students want to know where did I get the iPads and so I explain about the community supporting them using iPads in the art room with generous contributions through Donors Choose. They kind of look at me askance, not believing me.
The computers in the class are slow but the iPad works fast and student pick up quickly on how to use them. We are working out the kinks and figuring out how to print from them. Having them in the art room has really improved the art room and given students a chance to use technology creatively.”
