Using Interactive Notebooks To Demonstrate Knowledge!

Funded Sep 4, 2019

I am so pleased to share with you the impact your donations to my project, 'Using Interactive Notebooks' had to my students and myself. The shock on their faces, as they saw the huge box of brand new supplies, was priceless!

Each year, I inevitably have students who start the year without any new school supplies. As you may imagine, those students face a plethora of emotions. Most of my students live in poverty and buying new school supplies is not even a consideration. Those students see others come in with new items and feel sad, envious, angry, and sometimes depressed. To expect these students to give it their all under these circumstances is unrealistic. For many of my students, brand new items are non-existent. They are accustomed to hand-me-downs and used items.

A big part of our learning centers around interactive notebooks. With these notebooks, students are able to demonstrate their learning through drawing. The necessary skills students need to learn are still covered; however, the difference is that students can express their learning through illustrations. For many students, this is an excellent way to 'show what they know.' Many struggle to express their thoughts and art has proven to be an effective method. All of their work is kept in their interactive notebook. This way, nothing gets lost and students are able to see their progress all year. Once June comes, students have a wonderful keepsake to take home!”

With gratitude,
