  • Secret Stories! Phonics Tools To Enhance Student Learning!

    Funded Mar 7, 2020

I'd like to thank you all for your support and for helping me get the Secret Stories for my students! I was so excited when I found out the project was funded and couldn't wait to share the posters and stories with my students. Unfortunately, I received the materials back in March on the day we were told that we would not be returning to school due to the Corona Virus. As I'm sure you understand, the chaos of moving to virtual learning and figuring out how to completely re-think my way of teaching was incredibly challenging. I wasn't able to fully deliver instruction using the Secret Stories once we moved to virtual learning. This year, I am at a new school and we started the year off virtually. However, we returned back to the classroom in the middle of November. While we were virtual I tried to use the secret stories to supplement my students' learning and they were really engaged. Since returning to the classroom, it has been a real treat to see the students reference the secret stories on the walls. They get excited when they hear a sound and instantly point to the secret story it matches. They love finding secrets in their names and other words. It is truly an engaging and fun tool to help supplement learning in phonics. Thank you so much again for helping support my classroom. It really makes all the difference!”

  • Expanding Reading and Math with Technology!

    Funded Oct 26, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous donation. The tablets have been incredibly useful and engaging for my students. These tablets have given my students an opportunity to use amazing programs, such as Raz Kids, during our small flexible group time. Raz Kids is an app that the students use to read books on their level! It even comes with comprehension questions at the end and allows me to see their progress as they move up reading levels. The kids still get excited each day when it is their turn to use the tablets. Adding these tablets have truly transformed my small flexible reading group time. The students and I sincerely appreciate your contribution. Thank you so much!”

  • Class Carpet and Meeting Place

    Funded Sep 19, 2018

I'd just like to thank you so much for your donations. The class rug is beautiful and the students were thrilled when they came into class one morning to see their brand new rug! They finally feel like they have enough space to sit and appreciate not having to sit on a cold hard surface anymore. We did have a small rug before this that was tearing at the seams. I'm so grateful to have a nice, beautiful carpet for the students to enjoy. They love the way it looks and like having their "own" square to sit on when we meet on the carpet every morning. The carpet has also been incredibly useful during our whole group lessons. I can gather all of the students to the carpet and have plenty of space for the kids to sit while I present a lesson. It keeps them engaged when we can be in close proximity. Again, thank you so much. The kids were truly surprised and overjoyed to receive the class rug. It will be used for many years to come. Also, I will be working on a new project for the spring to get new supplies for my students. Be on the lookout! :) I still need to build up my classroom, but this rug was the most wonderful start for this first year teacher!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brittany Carter

Creating a classroom community is crucial and should be set up from the very beginning of the school year. One way to build your classroom community is to have morning meetings at a specific gathering place in the room every day. Currently, my meeting area is a small space in front of the board where we gather for morning meetings. The rug is small and plain and does not fit my class of 18. We do the best we can but I feel like morning meetings would have a very different feel if the students were able to sit on a rug that fit everyone. Right now everyone is squished together and it is not possible for us to even create a circle. I find it hard to fully engage the students since they are having a hard time getting comfortable. If this project were funded, I know this large rug would transform my morning meetings and help build up my classroom community.
