I work in a high poverty district where the majority of the students are English Language Learners. Approximately a third of the students in our district are qualified as homeless. They struggle to keep up with classmates because they lack that one on one interaction with their parents that some children are lucky to have, because their parents are often home late from work. They also lack the materials that are needed and the technology access at home which allows them to practice their skills. I have worked hard to build a classroom culture in which my students respect themselves and each other, and to show appreciation for whatever is given to them, such as gifts from people like you.
