  • We Grow When We Read Hi-Lo!

    Funded Jan 1, 2025

I didn't read my work email during the break, so I'm late thanking you for your generosity and thoughtfulness...but no less grateful.

It's wonderful to be able to offer my students this incredible variety of books at their level to help them jump-start their reading journeys. I firmly believe that once we figure out what they like to read, their reading challenges will melt away.

    Thanks again for your donation!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Bennett

  • Back to School Supplies For ALL

    Funded Sep 4, 2024

You've provided much more than the items in this order. Every time we post a project to Donors Choose, we gain a little extra time for our students. We get some peace of mind about where we'll find the extra cash for (more) fidgets (again!). We get back the time we used to spend helping students find a particular worksheet when we can say, "It's the yellow one." We get to give a student with terrible writing a composition book with columns, so they can write their math work clearly.

But above all that, we gain the knowledge that there are generous people out there who know that what we do matters.

Thank you for your generous support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Bennett

  • More Mysteries, Please

    Funded Feb 28, 2024

My students read well below grade level...but it seems like every year I have students who need something more accessible than what I already have. And the #1 request is for mysteries and horror.

These books tick all the boxes. They're at levels my students can handle, and they're the right content.

Thanks to these books (and others I've obtained thanks to Donors Choose), I have the honor of watching students grow from 'I hate reading' to 'Is there a book 7?' during a school year. I've had students increase their scores two and three grade levels thanks to your generosity. I'm very grateful.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Bennett

  • Classroom Essentials

    Funded Aug 29, 2023

It's probably difficult to imagine, but students just aren't carrying pencils any more. And we never want a lack of supplies to be the barrier between a student and his or her education. That's the impact of the pencils in this project--we are ensuring that every student has access to what we teach.

Fidgets seem like toys--and some students do treat them as toys--but for those who struggle to remain still, having a simple fidget satisfies their need for movement, and they can focus on the lesson. Your generosity again ensures that all students can access the lesson.

Students aren't terribly excited about the pencils, but their eyes lit up at the amazing assortment of fidgets we received. They know how much it helps! They were equally excited about the headphones. Kids without headphones tend to be those who live in poverty, so these are a fantastic addition to our classrooms. Thanks so much.

We're incredibly grateful for your support!”

    Mrs. Bennett

  • Strong Series for Striving Students

    Funded Mar 31, 2023

My students were thrilled to see me add these sets of Amulet, Lunch Lady, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Amulet, Origami Yoda, and Dog Man to our classroom library! One student in particular was *very* happy to have the books about Muhammad Ali, Tommie Smith, and The Tulsa Massacre.

We are so fortunate to have your support. I usually buy used books to match student interests, but I can only buy so many of them. Having these very popular series books gives all students something to read when the one about their favorite hobby or era has been completed.

    Thanks again for your generosity!!”

  • Special Supplies for Special Students

    Funded Nov 30, 2022

We are so grateful for your incredible generosity. The essential supplies you've funded have made our jobs supporting Cascade's Special Ed population much easier and have helped close the gaps created by racial and economic differences.

We see and touch signs of your generosity daily. We've been able to create bright posters to help students remember key facts about math. We've been making color-coded handouts to help students distinguish between assignments. We haven't once had to say we're out of fidgets, and we always have a pencil when a student needs one. The calendar magnets are teaching students about the days of the week and the months of the year. We were able to help two students whose backpacks were no longer usable.

Thanks for helping out our Special Education students! You are special donors, indeed!”

  • Non-Readers Need Books, Too!

    Funded Apr 7, 2022

This year I began teaching middle schoolers with the reading levels we associate with kindergarten students and first-graders. I wanted to give them books that would keep their middle-school minds busy without the challenge and frustration of middle-school reading levels.

The books in this project were selected to appeal to specific students. They were thrilled to see that I brought in their favorites and eagerly chose books to read. Giving them books they already love makes a tremendous difference in their motivation to improve their reading.

Thanks from the bottom of my heart for your generosity!”

  • Return To Real Reading

    Funded Nov 30, 2021

Your amazing generosity has helped dozens of students already! The graphic novels you've funded--such as the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series--are the books kids *want* to read.

One reason I'm so grateful for your support is that Donors Choose provides brand new books. I usually purchase used books, so my classroom library can look a bit tattered. When I add books funded by Donors Choose, it immediately upgrades the whole "look" of my classroom. Students feel they matter when they can hold a new book. And I want my students to know they matter!!

Thanks again for supporting my economically and racially diverse classroom as they become strong readers!”

  • Positive Behavior Rewards

    Funded Jan 21, 2021

Having rewards to work toward has motivated students with behavior issues during this unprecedented time in education. The snacks you funded are working magic with students who need practice working hard, showing up for class, and making good choices.

In our program, students earn "money" when they achieve weekly goals, which they can then use to buy snacks and prizes from a student store. They were delighted with the variety of items and appreciated that the rewards were things they would actually choose for themselves. They've also relished counting their money and saving to buy the pricier options--which is another way of saying that they're motivated to show us the behaviors we want to see.

To help students earn even more, we're encouraging them to help others and do volunteer work in our buildings. These students aren't just achieving their goals, they are expanding their thinking about how they affect others.

Thanks very much for your support!”

  • Naruto Now!

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Although many students will read these books this year and in the future, I got them specifically for a student with a very low reading level who really struggles to choose books to read.

He loves these! He finished the first book in record time, and is working his way through the series. He loves the action and I think he also identifies with the hero.

I'm so grateful to have a way to get the books my students want RIGHT NOW into their hands. Donors Choose makes a real difference in my world.”
