These materials will make a huge difference in my classroom because it is something that I feel will not only engage my students, but will evoke strong emotions and meaningful class discussions throughout our reading. I've found that my students have a difficult time staying interested in books when they can't relate to them, and I believe this book will offer them that moment of, "Oh yeah, I've been through that and I know how that feels." Not only will the students be able to consider the emotions/struggles of the main character, but they will also be able to relate to the age of Auggie and the difficulties that come with a new school and complications with peers. I believe this is a wonderful book for my students to dive into and gain a better understanding of kindness and the true meaning of empathy. It will also be a great opportunity to highlight the variety of themes presented in the book and for the students to have these discussions in small groups. My hope is for this book to change my students outlook on the world around them.
