Growing Imagination And A Love Of Reading
Funded Dec 5, 2013When my students received their At-Your-Seat-Storage Bags they were extremely excited. I allowed them to decorate a sentence strip with their name and any other picture they wanted to add to it. They immediately starting asking if they could go to the library to fill up their bags. When we had our first silent reading session after receiving the bags they were happy that they did not have to get out of their seats to change their books.
My students use their bags daily since we have daily silent reading time. When they complete a book during the allotted reading time, they simply reach into their bags and select another book. I have noticed that since we received the bags that my students are a lot more focused on what they are reading during silent reading time. They also find it much easier for them to share books. Since we have so many books in our library they are able to ask their friends for suggestions and share books from their bags instead of spending long amounts of time rummaging through the bookshelf.
Since my students are more focused on their reading I not only saw improvement in their effort but also in their academics. The best way to learn something new is by practicing it. Since they have been practicing reading much more and not just taking books off the shelf, they are improving in reading my leaps and bounds.”
