We Want to Read!
Funded Mar 9, 2016Thank you so much for donating money to our project! We are so grateful for your generosity, it means so much to have a variety of books in our classroom library.
We use these books to help teach a variety of concepts of reading. For one, students reading at these levels need to build their reading stamina to over an hour's length of time. We use time on Fridays to have "Reading Marathons" to help build stamina, with students reading for up to 90 minutes at a time. We also use these texts to help build reading comprehension. We have students stop and jot their noticings in the book, as well as ask inferrential questions based on the stories.
We follow the Reading Workshop Model in our classroom. Every day, students are engaged in a mini-lesson on the carpet, where they are learning a new skill in reading. Then, students are given the opportunity to engage in an activity with a partner on the carpet. Students share out their thinking and work to the class as a group. Finally, students work independently, with a partner, or small groups for applied practice taught during the mini lesson. Students come back to the carpet for a share to discover each other's work.
Students were so excited when they saw the books arrive in our classroom. Many are into the series, for examples Goosebumps, Amulet and such. They love going through the series, especially since the series move up in levels as the readers, hopefully, do. It is so exciting to to see their faces when they see the new texts in the library when they book shop!”

Classroom Chair Storage Sacks
Funded Sep 9, 2013Thank you for your donations towards our classroom seat sacks. Your generosity shows us how lucky we truly are. Working in a low-income area, our school unfortunately was unable to obtain desks for our fourth and fifth graders. Therefore, we only have tables and chairs in our classroom. Each student has a fair amount of school supplies to manage, and these seat sacks help with their organization and use of each notebook, folder, and book.
This class is a self-contained, special education class where teaching management and organization skills are crucial to a student's development. Each student is aware of where their materials are at all times and can refer to anything in their seat sack. This allows for minimal distraction of materials and more focus on academics. Once our students are organized with their materials, they can easily focus on the academics and give their best efforts.
Schools like us are lucky to have people like you donate. Teachers sometimes struggle with resources within their means and cannot give everything their students needs and deserve. Thanks to you, you have fulfilled this want of mine and gave these students an opportunity of organization in the classroom. Thank you again for your donations.”

Word Problem Practice Materials
Funded Dec 13, 2012I can't fully express my joy, excitement, and thanks for your donation to my project. It is great to see that you share my vision for reaching children. Math is such an essential piece of fourth grade learning.
The tools that you have funded will enable students master several skills and concepts for attacking math word problems. Located in an impoversed area, simple materials like paper and labels are sometimes difficulty to attain. Being that this is a new grade to our school, we definitely needed these materials to practice solving 33 different types of word problems in preparation for the state exams.
I hope to share with my colleagues a new technique in learning. Thank you so much. I can't wait to introduce these tools to the children.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Erlick
