Bringing Literacy to the Art Room
Funded Dec 4, 2019I can not express in words the gratitude I feel for the amazing new library and reading space in my art room. My students now have the most amazing space to learn, explore, and be creative.
Since building my new reading space, many of my students have pulled me aside to tell me how happy it makes them feel to be in my classroom. I have seen students reading to each other and talking about what they are reading in ways that I could never have dreamed! From my desk I can hear snippets of personal stories that relate to the books and big art vocabulary words that they are learning as they read. They are excited to learn about art and artists.
My art teacher heart is full. My goal is to teach my students that art is not just making things that are pretty. We are learning about being creative and being inspired in as many ways as we can. This space has given many of my students a new way to see art and connect to its amazing power. I am forever thankful for the generosity and support we received from our friends at donorschoose.org. Your donations are being put to good use here at the AC Whelan School in Revere, MA.”

Funded Jan 16, 2019My students at the A.C. Whelan Elementary School have been so excited to build and create in our new art room maker space. Having these materials has given my students a new outlook on what the creative process can teach us. The smiles on their faces when we figure out how to create something new or solve an engineering problem is the most rewarding gift a teacher can receive.
Some of our greatest learning moments have come from our new ability to collaborate and work together in this space. Most of these students spend the majority of their day in a classroom, sitting at a desk, working individually or in pairs. This new space has allowed many students the ability to come together and find ways to work as a team in a non-stressful environment where learning is now fun and interactive.
I have found that many of my previously unmotivated workers have found new joy in creating things using our new materials. We are so thankful for the donations we have received for our art room and will continue to use them to grow and learn together in this space. We have started collecting more STEAM materials and are working on setting up new challenges to add to our amazing maker space. Thank you for helping us make our creative dreams realities.”
