As our students take on the role of historical detectives of the American Revolution, they will uncover the various perspectives of the people who lived during this time, including marginalized peoples. They will think about what Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness meant to all people involved. Through their research, they will consider how a person's experience influences their perspective. The money raised through this project will fund a theater residency to hire two teaching artists to work with students as they learn how to give a voice to people of the past. This theater residency will empower our students as they live inside of historical stories and characters to develop a deeper understanding of the past, and translate this learning into a lifelong skill that will allow them to become engaged participants in the world.
We believe that through the theatrical arts, children build confidence, compassion and creativity.
As students work closely with teaching artists, they will learn how to step into the shoes of another person to practice empathy and perspective-taking. Through their work in creating drama and conflict, they will bring historical voices to light and strengthen their own voice and expression in the process.
Students will select a voice they want to represent in a theatrical performance. All students will write an original playscript (persuasive or historical fiction through letter writing, speech writing, newspaper article, debate, poetry, song, monologue or dialogue). They will have the opportunity to present this work in a way that will showcase another side of their creative self-expression.
For our final performance, we will create a historical setting where students will vividly bring scenes to life to highlight multiple perspectives from the past. Our authentic audience is the member our of integrated community--family, friends, teachers, and fellow students.
