In second grade, many of the standards require students to only read, write and do math. There is no time for "art" or fun activities, but that does not stop me from incorporating it into my curriculum. I try to make learning fun. When we write, they listen to classical music and draw a picture at the end. Some of my students don't know how to write, but a simple drawing can tell the story. Art is a place for children to learn to trust their ideas, themselves, and explore what is possible -Maryann Kohl. The other day we did a project about pets. They selected a book about an animal of choice, wrote about the animal, and then drew a picture. I gave them freedom to work wherever and use markers. A few students wanted to work on the floor, but did not have anything to write on top of. The clipboards would have been perfect for them to complete their project at the carpet. Also, the students had to share one box of markers, one box of color pencils, and a student's gel pen. The project took longer than I anticipated because everybody wanted to use the markers and gel pen. I had to compromise for the lack of materials by instructing a few students to use a different color in order for them to finish. I know these supplies will allow my students' creativity grow throughout the year.
