First Year SpEd Class Setting Us Up for Success

My students and I greatly appreciate the support you've given us. As a special day class for students with specific learning disabilities, we need a lot of tools that are tangible, engaging, and that help us with maintaing focus during lessons. My students were absolutely thrilled when I shared with them our new materials.

As some students shared in their letters, the fidgets were a huge success. Having something tangible helps my students be able to concentrate better while doing their work. Sometimes we use them as incentives for students that need breaks between long tasks and it has helped students stay on task for longer periods of time. The wobble cushions and noise-cancelling headphones are another set of tools that students use daily. When working independently, the noise cancelling headphones help with student focus and the wobble cushions help with any students who may need to wiggle a little more often.

We are currently diving into fractions and our fraction tiles have been extremely beneficial as they have served as a visual model. They have helped students better understand equivalent fractions and we hope to continue to use them as we move towards representing fractions on a number line. We use the Splash! Games as a warmup and we especially like that we are able to practice different skills and we are able to differentiate the games based on student needs.
