As a teacher at alternative high school in an urban school district, my students face challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite this, they arrive ready to learn each day, and I strive to match their drive with creative and meaningful learning experiences. My students may seem rowdy, but they show unimaginable tenacity in every challenge they encounter. They like to collaborate on their projects, conquer historical texts, and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households or living in group homes, and all of them receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Such things may place them "behind the starting line;" but I see their immense potential for growth and success.
