My students attend a public school for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in an urban school district. Over 90% of these students qualify for free or reduced priced lunch and many are English Language Learners. These students come from every neighborhood in the city and some neighboring suburbs. Breakfast starts just after seven, so many of these very young students are waking up before six o'clock to make it to school on time. Many of these students have difficulty communicating with their own families because they do not share a common language, whether American Sign Language (ASL) or spoken English. In spite of all these challenges, these students love school. It is a place where they can communicate with their peers and teachers and they love their classmates like family. They are stronger than I could have ever imagined and make their teachers smile every day.
