Most of my students are enjoying their very first school experience. While it is my job to focus on developing communication skills, I also have to teach basic school skills and work to ease the transition from home to school. Three hours is a long time for three-year-olds (or anyone!) to attend speech therapy, so some of my little ones have difficulty with sitting and attending to activities. With three-year-olds, tantrums are inevitable. With three-year-olds who can't always express themselves, frustration is even more common.
We are requesting flexible seating options including cube chairs, Hokki stools, wobble cushions and a cozy calming corner with beanbag chair, soft seats, behavior board books, emotion dolls, fidget toys in their K3 speech and language classroom. These materials will help increase my students' ability to participate in and benefit from group therapy activities.
My students need a variety of seating options to increase engagement during structured activities like Circle Time and Story Time. Some of my more active students will benefit from Hokki stools and wobble cushions so they can keep moving! Others will benefit from cube chairs to help keep them contained and remind them to respect personal space. My students also need a designated Calming Corner with a variety of seating options (beanbag chair, soft seats), fidget toys, board books, and dolls. They will use these materials to help with expressing their emotions and calming themselves down so they are able to return to the group activity as soon as possible.
