Most of my students are reading far below grade level. Every student at my school receives free lunch. Many are second language learners and will be the first in their families to graduate from high school. Despite the challenges they face at home and in their neighborhood, they bring their passion and street-savvy to class every day, making connections and asking deep questions. They are compassionate and respectful, funny and creative, and they use language in ways I could never predict. But perhaps most importantly, they are incredibly resilient, overcoming immense obstacles to persevere and succeed.
