Creative activities provide an outlet for young children to express their emotions. Healthy social-emotional development in young children is linked to their cognitive development and their future academic achievement. Your generous donation of markers Magna-tiles, animals, glue sticks, and play dough will ignite my students' imaginations! Furthermore, these materials will help them to express and cope with their feelings.
Young children experience loss and trauma just like adults; however, they do not have the language skills to express how they feel. Dramatic play and creative play help young children work through their emotions. Many of my children have never experienced animals and cannot name any beyond a dog and cat.
They have never experienced sand play and love how it feels in their fingers. By having a sand and water table, we can do experiments of how things float and sink. Also, we could learn how water makes things move by placing different toys in the water table. The table could be used for so many different materials and activities! Young children can spend countless hours playing with water: pouring it back and forth, watching it spill over the edge of a container, blocking its stream, directing its flow, splashing gently, making waves, and pouring some more. They learn physics because of flow and motion and mathematics with measuring and volume.
