My school is a relatively new high school in the State of Maine. The school that I teach at is in the eleventh year of existence. We are a small ethnically and racially diverse high school (about 40% English Language Learners), with a high percentage (just under 50%) of students who receive free or reduce lunch. Because of the small size of our school, less than 400 students, we are able to create a climate where teachers know students very well and can help push students to reach their full potential. The challenge of being a new school is that we do not have the collection of permanent resources that most long standing schools have accumulated over time.
