My students are second graders in a high poverty urban public school. 70% of them are learning English as a second language. Many are homeless and/or highly mobile. They come to my classroom for instruction in English. We use science and social studies as a vehicle to teach academic English. Our units of study include: insect life cycles, engineering/simple machines, maps and globes, solids and liquids, and weather. Unfortunately, the school lacks some of the classroom furniture that students need to feel comfortable in their learning space.
