My 6th-grade science class is a small group of very curious, but challenged learners. Every year we do a longterm project where they write and illustrate a book about animal adaptations. It is always their favorite assignment and they get to learn new skills, like how to conduct research, cite text evidence, write poetry and illustrate a book. After they finish the book, we have a publishing event where they read their poem to an audience that guesses which animal the poem is about. Afterwards, they answer audience questions about their animals. This helps them develop public speaking skills in a safe space. A hardback copy of the book is put in the school library for everyone to see. My students learn valuable skills and always take great pride in their accomplishments. They come into my classroom as challenged learners, but they leave as published authors. (Bobcat illustration by Alyssa, age 11.)
