Flexible seating will be set up in a collaboration-friendly way. Think: mini living rooms and dining rooms. Students will be able to choose between these bar height chairs, standing, sitting on a rug, swivel chairs, and--yes--desks, according to how they focus best. Some students like to snuggle in a chair (I already have one chair they use), some like to lean against the wall, some like the firmness of a table, etc. This setup also lends itself naturally to group work. Instead of having to haul 30 desks screechingly across the floor, I can simply turn a couple of chairs around to make the group sizes I'm looking for. I also tell my students that they have the freedom to move anywhere when they're reading. This gives them flexibility to choose for themselves and forces them to be responsible. I already use a limited version of this idea with my "big red chair." Students know they can sit there without asking, but lose privileges if they abuse it by phone use, sleeping, or attempting to abuse the furniture (this has never happened).
