  • Mom! Dad! Let's Read Together! Family Literacy Bag Project

    Funded Apr 7, 2010

Thank you so much for your donation of School-to-Home Organizers! My students absolutely love to take home our literacy bags each weekend, but the old bags we used just didn't stand up to the wear and tear of this well-loved classroom routine. Many of my students do not have even a single book at home, so they look forward to taking home books to read with their families each week.

The new organizers you donated help keep materials in each literacy bag clean, neat, and in the proper places. Students are able to see the books each bag contains, which has piqued student interest in many of the themed bags. Also, students are much more able to check out bags independently, which helps to increase teaching time and student responsibility.

I am so grateful for your kindness and generosity. Thank you for helping promote family literacy for my young readers!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Rushing to Play Rush Hour!

    Funded Mar 24, 2010

I cannot thank you enough for your generous donation of critical thinking games! My students are completely engaged in these games as soon as they come out, and beg for more time to play when it's time to put them away. I don't think they realize that they're learning critical problem-solving skills while they're having so much fun! It is especially encouraging to hear my English Language Learners describing moves they or their friends might want to make using words like, "Move the dark green train car down." Having to use more precise words is pushing my students to explore new vocabulary.

Thank you again for so kindly supporting our classroom! ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Mo Willems, No Problems!

    Funded Dec 22, 2009

"YES!!!," "Awesome!," and other cheers of excitement filled the room when the Elephant and Piggie books you donated arrived in our classroom. Since then, we have read aloud each of the books, which the students have studied intently for funny, touching, and surprising parts in each text. These 22 books have quickly become the most popular books in our library!

My students love to partner up with a classmate and read aloud the book to one another, with one student reading Elephant's parts and the other reading Piggie's. I've noticed that students who are otherwise shy while reading with a peer quickly come out of their shells, enthusiastically reading the words with excitement and fluency. Because the books are written at a very accessible reading level for first graders, all of my students can independently read these books. Having books students love that are also easily readable has really helped to build each child's confidence in their reading skills.

Donors like you help students like mine become engaged, passionate learners. Thank you for helping my first graders truly love to read and enjoy literature!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Can You Hear Me Now? Good!

    Funded Dec 13, 2009

I cannot say enough about how much my students enjoy using the whisper phones you donated to our classroom! The whisper phones have helped my students maintain an interest in independent reading. Many of my students are English Language Learners, so they greatly benefit from hearing themselves make letter sounds as they read. As an added benefit, the phones encourage my students to whisper softly, making our reading workshop a much quieter and more productive place!

I am constantly floored by the generosity of strangers like you who donate to my classroom and others through DonorsChoose. Thank you so much for helping encourage young people to read and learn!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Mami, Papi, Will You Read to Me?

    Funded Nov 16, 2009

I cannot adequately tell you how much your donation of Spanish-language books means to my students! While my students are in an English-speaking classroom, many of their families read, speak, and write solely in Spanish. When my students fall in love with a book we read aloud, they beg to take it home. Now, those students with Spanish-speaking families can share these favorite books with their parents, grandparents, and other caretakers. In just a short time, these books have become some of the most popular in our classroom library!

Children benefit greatly from reading books with and to adults. Because of you, my students now have the necessary materials to share a love of reading with parents and other loved ones, in a language both the adult and child can understand.

Thank you for selflessly contributing to the education of young people!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Ducks, Castles, and a Traffic Jam

    Funded Sep 15, 2009

I cannot begin to describe the excitement and interest in learning your generous gift has brought to our classroom. The games you donated have been a huge hit! Students have greatly enjoyed challenging themselves to think ahead and problem solve, both individually and with their classmates. A quiet buzz permeates the room as soon as Rush Hour Jr., Toot and Otto, and other games come out. I have also seen an increase in the quality of talk between students, as they articulate their thinking and planning with their peers.

The students in my classroom often do not have games to play at home, especially ones that are high quality and that promote critical thinking. Without your donation, my students would never have exposure to such positive, engaging, and mind-challenging games. Thank you for all you've done to promote learning for my young students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Check Out a Great Book (and Keep It Safe)!

    Funded Jul 20, 2009

Thank you so much for your incredible generosity, which has allowed this project to be a success! My students love their book pouches and they're already using them nightly to transport books to and from school. They're excited to take books home for parents, siblings, and other family members to read with and to them. It is incredible to see the enthusiasm that comes from students being able to check out library books, take them home, and proudly return them, sharing "My mom read me this book!"

Our school is located in a high-need urban area, where most children do not own a single book in their homes. It is my mission to provide students with the tools they need to become better readers - especially great books! Your donation of book pouches is allowing my students to become successful readers and to share a love of reading with their families.

Thank you again for your support of my young readers!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • PLANT-tastic Hands-On Learning!

    Funded Apr 11, 2009

Thanks to your generous donation, our plants and soil unit was a success! My students used the materials in the plant and rock & soil centers daily during our science unit. Our school is in a very urban area with little yard space for creating gardens. When the students got to "plant" seeds in their window greenhouses and track the growth of their beans, they were ecstatic! Simple objects they see everyday, such as pebbles, came to life in a new way when given materials to "test" the rocks with scales, magnifying glasses, and other scientific tools.

I firmly believe that it is crucial for students to explore their world in a hands-on way, and when students and teachers lack the materials to do so, learning suffers. With the plant and rock & soil centers you've provided for our classroom, each student had the opportunity to investigate plant growth and rock and soil formation.

Thank you for inspiring a classroom full of young scientists!”

  • Creating Mathematicians One Game at a Time!

    Funded Dec 31, 2008

Thank you so very much for providing a wonderful set of resources to our classroom! My students love to use centers during reading, and until now we have not had adequate resources to have centers during math. By so generously donating math games, each student will have the opportunity to reinforce skills in a hands-on way. In a first grade classroom, there are many ability levels, and the math centers you have donated will provide every child in our classroom to work at his or her own level. I appreciate your kindness and willingness to give back to our classroom. We can't thank you enough”

  • Tools For First Grade Writing Success!

    Funded Dec 23, 2007

Thank you so very much for your generosity and kindness in contributing to my project request. I can assure you that my students will be so excited to use their new tabletop writing center and word journals! Writing has become such a powerful tool for language development in our classroom, and growth in each child has been very clear through the implementation of a writer's workshop. The materials you have so selflessly given to my students will enable them to become even stronger writers and learners. Thank you once again, and we look forward to using the wonderful materials you've donated to our classroom”
