  • Mom! Dad! Let's Read! Family Literacy Bag Project Part 2

    Funded Sep 3, 2010

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your donation of the mobile book cart to our classroom! My students love taking home our literacy bags each week, and now we have a great way to organize these coveted materials. Each section of the mobile book cart is labeled with a literacy bag theme, such as animals and science. The sections are the perfect size to allow our literacy bags to stand upright, which makes it very easy for students to select and check out a literacy bag independently.

My students and I thank you from the bottoms of our hearts for your generous contribution to our classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Reading Is Within Sight: Building Fluency with Sight Words

    Funded Sep 10, 2010

Thank you so much for your donation of a set of Sight Word Readers to my classroom! Since receiving the Sight Word Readers, my students have become more confident readers. Each book is primarily written with short, commonly used words to reinforce learning of these key words. Because the text is repetitive and predictable, even my most emergent readers feel comfortable reading these texts. The sight word practice pages and sight word flashcard rings have been going back and forth between home and school for students who need additional practice, and the student and family response has been amazing!

Thank you again for supporting young learners and for improving my literacy instruction!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Tag, You're It! Helping First Graders Learn to Read

    Funded Sep 24, 2010

When our set of Tag Readers arrived, my students let out a squeal of delight! In the weeks since your generous donation of these tools arrived, I've noticed my students have an increased interest in reading, improved phonemic awareness, and growing vocabularies.

For many of my students, reading is a daunting task made more difficult because English is not their first language. However, the Tag Readers have helped my first graders learn how to correctly pronounce words, as well as read with fluency and in turn boost comprehension.

Thank you again for providing us with tools that empower young readers!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Math... It's in the Bag! First Grade Take-Home Math Packs

    Funded Aug 29, 2010

The looks on my students' faces when they received the math games and books you donated were of surprise, excitement, and joy. Each take-home math pack these materials have created are in high demand during our weekly literacy bag check out.

Many of my students' families want to help their children improve their math skills, but often lack the resources to do so effectively. Each book in these packs provides families with background information about the math skills they will practice together. The problem solving activities provide structured practice while also encouraging students to think outside the box when solving math problems. Each kit contains a variety of manipulatives to help find solutions to each problem, which benefits students across a broad spectrum of abilities.

Thank you for providing my students and their families with the tools they need to be successful readers and mathematicians!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Making Math a Family Affair! Take Home Math Packs Project 2

    Funded Aug 31, 2010

Thank you so much for your donation of take-home math packs to our classroom! Each year, I find that my students want to practice new skills they are learning in math at home, but families often do not have the materials to provide this crucial practice.

Thanks to your generosity, there are now eight packs that students can take home to practice telling time and counting money. The activities are great for students to practice at home with a parent, sibling, or other family member because they are engaging and self-checking. The related books contain interesting story lines while also teaching key mathematical concepts.

Family involvement is critical to student achievement, and your donation of take-home math packs has already strengthened the home-school connection and improved math skills. Donors like you have ensured that my students and their families have the resources they need to be successful!”

  • I'm A Published Author!

    Funded Oct 8, 2010

I cannot thank you enough for supporting my young learners! We are already putting our classroom publishing center and drawing materials to good use, and my first graders have never been so enthusiastic about writing.

The realistic blank books, magazines, and newspapers you so generously donated to our classroom have been a huge hit! Choosing to write with our publishing materials is at the top of many students' lists for activities to do during center time. Students who previously would not write freely are now writing with ease and excitement. The templates are also providing me with numerous opportunities to embed teaching about nonfiction text features within this highly coveted writing time. The people colors colored pencils and twist-up crayons have made illustrating much more exciting, and my students beg to use these special drawing tools.

Thank you again for providing such valuable materials to my thirty first grade authors!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • We Need Clipboards To Help Us Learn On The Go!

    Funded Oct 8, 2010

Thank you so much for your donation of clipboards to our classroom! My students have renewed enthusiasm for writing, which I believe is due to their ability to use clipboards. Rather than just sitting at their tables, my students are now able to find a cozy spot in the room to write during Writing Workshop. Having a clipboard for every student also enables my students to write in their reader's notebooks or on Post-Its while I read aloud at the rug, keeping them close to the text while also providing a hard surface upon which to write.

Our district's schools are facing a budget shortfall, so requests for even basic materials cannot be met. Without your help, my students would not have access to these wonderful resources. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Mummies, Spiders, and Volcanoes, Oh My!

    Funded Jun 24, 2010

I cannot adequately express my gratitude for your generous donation of nonfiction texts to my first grade classroom. My students love to ask questions and find out the answers to their queries, but we lacked appropriate research materials in a number of subjects. Now, my students have easy access to high-quality books about Mexico, mummies, volcanoes, and other favorite topics. Students have the opportunity to research these topics during independent reading, but also may check out each theme's materials through our literacy bag program. This ensures opportunities for my students to read in class as well as to promote family literacy.

My students are intrigued, excited, and amazed by what they are learning daily through the books you have so kindly provided to our classroom. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Mastering Math with Problem Solving Journals!

    Funded Jun 29, 2010

Thank you so much for your donation of math problem solving journals to our classroom! My first graders look forward to each time we get to use these problem solving journals. Solving word problems has greatly increased my students' ability to use the language of math in their journals as well as in everyday conversations. Students who previously had little confidence in math are now eager to demonstrate their knowledge, draw and write about what they know, and talk about their learning with their classmates when we "share out" at the end of our problem solving sessions.

Budgets in many schools, including ours, are tight, and without your generosity, my students would have gone without these problem solving journals. Thank you for your commitment to math education!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Angie Stewart

  • Extra, Extra, Read All About It!

    Funded Apr 30, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donation of a Time for Kids subscription to my first graders! They have eagerly pored through the first month's magazines and are eager for more! So many of my students lack quality books at home, and those children who do have books often have ones that are not age-appropriate nor of very high quality. Your donation of a Time for Kids subscription gives my students the opportunity to take home their very own magazines each weeks to share with family and friends.

In the coming months, we will also be using our Time for Kids magazines to study nonfiction text features, boost our reading comprehension skills, and make connections between content we are learning in class and current events happening in our world.

Thanks again for your generosity and for supporting my young learners!”

    With gratitude,
