The sensory and motor room will allow our elementary students to access vital movement (gross and fine) and sensory (joint input, tactile, olfactory, pressure) input that facilitates productive responses from their minds and bodies. The yoga balls provide a number of opportunities for strengthening and sensory input. The metronome provides an organizing beat that begins each session. To close out the session, the children have an opportunity to use a sound machine that gives nature sounds, and a night light that provides visual stimulation. The chimes give an auditory and vibratory signal that it's time for the body to slow down and prepare for their next classroom activity. Our four "trial" schools using this model report improved focus, increased self-awareness, increased endurance for school activities (sitting, standing in line, tolerating classmates, feedback), and reductions in behavioral concerns. The room will be accessible during each school day, and the trial schools have come up with scheduled access geared towards each child's particular needs. Also, many of the activities and approaches are easily transferable so that the child can access them throughout their academic career.
