My children are very special. They are bright, beautiful, curious, engaging, and sweet. Because my class is differentiated, they also have special problems and learning disabilities. Some of them face more difficulty in a single week than most of us will face in our entire lifetime. I consider myself fortunate to get to teach these kids. Every time someone smiles and says, "I love this song!" or "Did you hear me play that?" when they mastered some piece of music, I realize that I've made a difference.
We are a small school with a high ESL population and over 70% free/reduced lunch. We live in a rural community with few recreational outlets for our children. Many come from single parent households where after school activities means getting home to an empty house and finding something to do. Some of them fix their own meals, take care of younger siblings, and get everyone including themselves to bed at night.
