We follow the Next Generation Science Standards and one of the concepts I never even heard of when I was in first grade was biomimicry; which is, how scientists design innovative new products by observing the structure and function of plants and animals. One example is Velcro... After a hunting trip in the Alps in 1941, Swiss engineer George de Mestral’s dog was covered in burdock burrs. Mestral put one under his microscope and discovered a simple design of hooks that nimbly attached to fur and socks. After years of experimentation, he invented Velcro. Having the Hands-On Science Specimen Centers will be a great asset in our investigations on the structures and functions of plants and animals. My students already L-O-V-E science, but having these supplies will only make them LOVE it more! Anytime I tell my students that we will be doing a science experiment or STEM activity, the room erupts in excitement! I can just imagine how excited they will be when I pull out the Create-A-Chain Reaction STEM Kit, See It Grow Plant Lab, and the Design and Build Engineering Centers. These kits and the daily science journals will provide my students the opportunity to develop their higher order thinking and problem solving skills and will allow them to collaborate with their peers.
