Diversify Our Photography Library!
Funded Jan 26, 2016My students like having these photography books in the room because they give them ideas for how to take pictures and how to edit them to have the strongest impact. They are often surprised by what they see in the books and call others over to show them something strange or beautiful.
My students are sophisticated urban teens. The photography books we ordered with your help deal with challenging themes around culture, identity, history, love and even sometimes violence. It's important to me that my students get to learn about how photographers grapple with the issues that my students see playing out in their lives and in their city.
The history of photography has often focused on straight, white men, while others have been left out. Thank you for helping me bring in the work of women photographers, Asian photographers, African AND African American Photographers, Latino and GLB photographers into view for my students.”

Get Serious Cameras in My Photo Students' Hands
Funded Sep 2, 2014Having the cameras I was able to purchase because of your donations has allowed us to do more in the photography classroom and not be held back by lack of resources. At first students were a little hesitant to use the unfamiliar new "big cameras". But fairly quickly they realized that our new cameras give them greater control and image quality in the photographs they take.
Having these cameras has also allowed me to lend out some of the smaller, older digital cameras for students to shoot with outside of school. When those cameras are lent out, we still have the high quality cameras you helped us purchase for students to use to practice techniques in class. I'm currently teaching three sections of Photography 1, which wouldn't be possible without your donations. On the project page you can see just a few images of students using the cameras you helped purchase, as well as a couple of examples of pictures they have taken using these cameras.
Photography has become one of the most popular classes at our high school. Students are excited about what they can capture and show as they learn to use different shutter speeds or lighting effects. Some students share the pictures they take with friends on social media. Their peers are always impressed. For these students, who have struggled so much academically, it's an amazing thing for them to be proudly showing something they've learned in school. Your donations are a part of that.”
