My class is a mixed fourth and fifth grade class in an alternative curriculum public school in a large west coast city. About one third of my students need specialized support with reading and writing. Nonetheless, we love to read and we are always in need of books that help us learn about real life things. Our curriculum is designed around field trips, experiences and immersion in subjects. We also use reader's and writer's workshop models which require that students are reading whole novels and texts - not textbooks.
