  • Dynamic Learning in Person and Online!

    Funded Sep 24, 2020

Distance learning has brought many challenges for all stakeholders in education. Students have live interaction with their teachers, but it is online and not face to face. This has made forming those vital connections very difficult. Teachers are still expected to cover the same content, but we see our students only half as much as we use to. Your generous donation has helped me to bridge some of the gaps that distance learning has created.

With the use of my Microsoft Surface and pen I have been able to create dynamic synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities for my students. During our synchronous sessions, which are very limited, I am able to use the white board feature on my new surface along with the pen to work out problems live. (Just like I use to on my large white board in front of a live class!) To help front load some of our content I have been able to create interactive notebooks for my students that have embedded videos that show how to solve some of our more complex problems. I have even been able to create personalized videos for individual students who have requested additional support.

While distance learning was not my first choice for my students this year, it is a very necessary precaution. Thanks to your generosity in helping me to acquire my new Microsoft Surface and pen, I have been able to create learning opportunities that are helping my students to achieve academic success!”

  • Post-It Cart

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me and my students pull off the ultimate prank. I was very fortunate to have all of my 7th grade colleagues join me on this adventure. This means that every 7th grade student at Nobel was able to participate in this hands on learning experience through their Math classes.

Prior to actually getting to cover our Principal's golf cart with post-it notes, our students had quite a task to complete. First, they were given a schematic of the principal's golf cart and asked to use Ratio and Proportional Reasoning to calculate the actual dimensions of the golf cart. Once the dimensions were calculated, students were able to find the surface area of the golf cart. Finally students calculated the area of a post-it note with 3 inch sides. Using these calculations, students were able to come up with an estimate of around 259 post-its to cover the cart. In order to keep the cart functional, we opted to only cover the exterior panels.

In reality, our magic number was 277 post-its to cover the cart. Our post activity discussion helped our students to see that our initial estimate did not account for the curves in the panels or for the fact that there were times that some post-its needed to overlap. Thank you for giving our students the memory of a lifetime while helping us to reinforce some of our standards based objectives from the school year.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gioulis

  • Scale, Volume, and Pranking the Principal

    Funded May 5, 2017

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me and my students pull off the ultimate prank. I was very fortunate to have all of my 7th and 8th grade colleagues join me on this adventure. This means that every 7th and 8th student at Nobel was able to participate in this hands on learning experience through their Math classes.

Prior to actually getting to stuff our Principal's office full of balloons, our students had quite a task to complete. First, they were given a blueprint of the principal's office and asked to use Ratio and Proportional Reasoning to calculate the actual dimensions of the office. Once the dimensions were calculated, students were able to find the volume of the office. Finally students calculated the volume of a sphere with a 12 inch diameter. Using these calculations, students were able to come up with an estimate of around 4800 balloons to fill the office.

In reality, our magic number was 2866 balloons to fill the office. Our post activity discussion helped our students to see that our initial estimate did not account for the furniture in the office or for the fact that a balloon is not a true sphere. Thank you for giving our students the memory of a lifetime while helping us to reinforce some of our standards based objectives from the school year.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gioulis
