A strong classroom library of read-alouds and novel studies is the pivotal tool to reaching, engaging, and impacting students of any age. Research shows that topic and theme based instruction is a powerful tool in allowing students to truly connect with material on a deeper level. The curriculum I have been working hard to design breaks our Language Arts units into sets of grouped texts that address topics including building community, honoring differences & similarities, understanding perspectives of others through race, cultural values, and personal beliefs, and investigating stories of physical and mental experiences. I am extremely passionate about using literature to help expose children of all ages to different ways of thinking, to empowering them to have conversations about the world we live in, and for giving them a platform and a voice to discuss how our world should be a community of respect for everyone in it. The books we are hoping for have been hand picked for our yearlong sequence of units based on teacher recommendations, awards won, authors of different backgrounds, characters of different cultures, attention to social emotional skill building, and, ultimately, books that will engage 4th graders and promote a love of reading.
