Our Classroom Library
Funded Feb 11, 2019First and foremost, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kind donation. I moved into this classroom in the middle of the school year and it was bare, there weren't any books in the classroom. I uploaded pictures so you could see the empty bookshelves. Unfortunately, our school library doesn't have a variety of books and the school doesn't have funds to provide classrooms with reading books. As teachers we already have to dig into our own pockets for daily school supplies so having a classroom library was just a dream. You were able to make that dream a reality for my students.
The text books that were selected were books that are culturally relevant to our students. Raymond Ave. Elementary is in the inner city and we serve African American and Latino students. When I selected the books I wanted the text to be relevant to them and the characters to look like them as well. There were some texts that discussed the importance of appreciating who you are and loving your hair, your culture, and knowing that you are enough. I used those text to give students the opportunity to share what they love about themselves and what unique qualities they bring into this world. I uploaded a picture of the culminating task for one of our book read alouds and it was an opportunity for our students to get to know each other as well as for me to get an insight into their lives.
All my students really enjoy the books. I have students staying in during recess and lunch because they want to use the books in the classroom library. I am also sharing the books with my grade level partners because we know sharing is caring. The books have changed the environment and provided a resource that my students needed so badly. They were thirsty for reading and your donation has opened up the door to rich text with a wealth of vocabulary to inspire our students to read.
All of our students deserve a classroom filled with books and because of you my students will have that privilege.”
