  • Just Mercy

    Funded Sep 6, 2020

We are reading Just Mercy, a book about social injustice. The students are really enjoying the book because they read The Hate U Give (THUG) and On the Come Up by Angie Thomas . I believe that many of the students can relate to the book. This type of book gets my students excited about reading.

This year, reading looks very different in my room then last year. This year I only have two classes that are face-to-face. I fear for the students having to share materials. I project the pages of the book onto the Smart Board and we read aloud. We have group discussions and the students talk in partners (socially distant). The students that I teach digitally, I use audio books that the students listen to and we discuss in a group chat or live.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Vich

I believe that many of the students can relate to the book. This type of book gets my students excited about reading.

The students particularly love this story because it is about a young gamer that goes viral. Then something happens in the gaming world that gives her platform a bad name.”

  • On The Come Up

    Funded Mar 2, 2020

We are reading On The Come UP by Angie Thomas. The students are really enjoying the book because they read The Hate U Give (THUG) by Angie Thomas last year. This book is not a continuation of The Hate U Give but similar writing and setting. I believe that many of the students can relate to the book. The book is about a young African-American teenager with big dreams. This young girl lives in poverty with a single mother what has lost her job. It is a story about fighting for your dreams, no matter what happens in your life, especially when you are a minority.

This year, reading looks very different in my room then last year. This year I only have two classes that are face-to-face. I fear for the students having to share materials. • The Hate U Give

    Funded Nov 7, 2019

Thank you so much for your kind donations. I have never taught a class book in high school before. I was unsure how it would turn out. A colleague and I have worked long hours creating an engaging and meaningful approach to teaching this book to our students. We started our lesson with history of the Black Lives Matter movement, most of our students are Hispanic or Latino, so we wanted to make sure it was understood. Our lessons include opportunities for the students to read silently, partner read, and listen to the audio-book.

Reading in my classroom looks different then most probably. This is a long book and I wanted to make sure that the students were engaged every time we read, and not get bored. We are reading the book three days a week; silent reading, partner reading, and audio-book. Each time that we read there is a starting and stopping point for each of the students to follow. Each time we read the students are held accountable for their reading by taking notes, filling in graphic organizers, exit slips, enter slips, and summaries of reading. There is a culminating project that is due at the end of the book.

I have about 95% participation from my students. It is exciting to see students whom normally don't do classwork or readings enjoy the book. Even my most challenging class is enjoying the book and are fully engaged. The students are engaged and excited to get to class the next day to continue the book. I have made several phone calls home to parents expressing my appreciation for their student to have the passion for reading this book. I have students that want to purchase the book and read ahead. It makes my heart so happy to see these students engaged and enjoying the book.”

  • Scissors and Glue

    Funded Oct 10, 2019

Thank you so much for the generosity of donating to my classroom. The students in my classroom are required to do interactive notebooks daily in my reading class. This requires a lot of glue and scissors. The majority of my students come from extremely low income households. They have a hard time bringing in classroom supplies. The glue and scissors are used on a daily basis by all of my students.

When my students arrived at school and saw this big box they are very excited. The kids were ecstatic to receive the larger style of scissors so they no longer had to use the elementary scissors. They loved the glue because I will no longer hound the students daily to bring in glue sticks.

The students continue to work in stations using the glue and scissors that were provided by the many donors. I am very grateful to allow the students the opportunity to continue to grow in reading by interacting with the text and each other.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Vich

I teach 10th grade Intensive Reading in a Title I school, this means that the majority of the school is at or below poverty. My students attend a suburban school with a high population of students with disabilities, including a classroom unit reserved for children with severe disabilities. These students mainly come from single parent households and no parental support. I want to improve my classroom in anyway shape or form to get these students reading and writing on grade level, which the majority of the students are behind. To create a better environment in the classroom, I will need materials for the students as well as myself to improve efficiency and manage my time better. Thank you for looking and/or donating to a great classroom.
