I have wanted to create a reading center for my students to experience the opportunity to enjoy Braille and Large Print reading materials in a quiet, informal setting. Since I work with a small population of students, I do not often have the resources or opportunity to create spaces that contain more than the bare necessities. Sitting at a table for all literacy activities can be difficult for many students, and mine are no exception! I'd like to help make Braille and Large Print reading more fun and engaging for my students by furnishing my classroom with an area rug, flexible seating, and an LED lamp. This will let me create a book nook where students can enjoy time to read between activities and to explore reading materials in a relaxed way that doesn't require them to sit at a desk or table. The lamp will provide adequate lighting for my low vision readers, and the lap desks will help students who use Braille or audiobook players to have a steady surface for their materials while reading or listening. I have also included a few books in my request that have interesting visual and tactile elements for my students to explore. I expect these materials to improve overall student engagement in the learning process and to support them in finding the fun and joy that I know can come with increased reading fluency. Thank you for considering this project, and thank you in advance for your donation!
