Five years ago, I became the Special Education teacher in an elementary school facing daunting challenges, including poverty and neighborhood violence, after many years as the school librarian. Budgeting shortfalls made it necessary to close the library. Serving students with learning disabilities is a challenge and a joy. Students blossom and test scores rise in our pull-out lessons. Once they realize that they are also smart and capable my students work hard finding new ways to learn material. As always, our biggest challenge is the school budget, which cannot provide the supplies we need. The help we receive through Donors Choose makes a huge difference for us.
