  • Engaging Students in the 21st Century

    Funded Nov 2, 2013

Thanks again for your generous donations to our iPad project. The students were so excited to receive the iPad mini. Our classroom now has 2 iPad minis and a regular iPad to use during our center times. Since the iPads belong to me I am able to purchase iTune cards so I can buy full version of apps that enhance my students learning experience. Before I was only able to download free apps on the iPad that belongs to the school. It's wonderful to be able to download the educational apps to help my students.

In the morning for our Language Arts centers having 3 iPads enables each student to use the iPad independently for 15 minutes. Occasionally, a student has to pair up with another classmate but they work well together when only 2 of them have to share, rather than 4 of them. During our math centers, I have been able to utilize the iPad more and pair them up with a partner while using a math app. It's great to see them working cooperatively, taking turns, and helping one another out if a classmate is struggling.

I am also using the iPads for more one on one interventions for those students who are struggling. The students are more engaged in an activity when they can use the iPads, rather than me holding flashcards. For example, there are great apps available to help with letter and sound recognition, which is more fun than me holding up flashcards. The students are more excited when they get called back to work with me and realize I have the iPads out.

I cannot thank you all enough for your generous donations. To see the children get so excited about learning is a wonderful feeling. The best part about it is, they think they are having fun and "just" playing a game, while in all actuality they are learning. It's great to see other people care about my students as much as I do!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Young

I have a great group of Kindergartners who are in love with technology! My students are so excited and engaged when I use the iPad as part of our daily centers. Many families in this area of the Upper Peninsula may not have the means or resources to have internet access at home, let alone computers.
