All students need support with literacy. Letter recognition, capitalization and lower case, and spelling are significant challenges for most of our students. The addition of a Sizzix die cutter and alphabet dies will allow students to work on their spelling, letters, and language while creating artwork. Letters are often a main focus of artists. They are used in various techniques of creating art. The die cutter could be used to cut several media: in felt, compressed sponges, paper and fabric. These letters can then be used to create through stamping, paper sculpture, scrapbooking, stenciling and more. Utilizing the Sizzix die cutter and alphabet dies in the art studio would help students practice literacy across the STEAM curriculum in all grades and would support the school's goal for improving Literacy. Tactile use of letters, arranging letters, beginning with students names is an important part of learning language and being literate. My students are not reading at grade level and often begin school at kindergarten not knowing their letters. This gift of materials would have life long learning impact on my students literacy. Having the ability to cut the letters via the Sizzix, in various media and then arrange them to spell or create art work encourages success and confidence for the student. They can engage in the process of production and how machines are useful and then create artwork that is reading based and art creative while practicing and applying literacy skills.
