  • Performing Our Way To English Language Confidence!

    Funded Dec 9, 2024

Thank you so much for your generosity, and for your support of the arts in schools! I am grateful to be able to offer our students some props and costumes for their spring performances, and I look forward to seeing what amazing lessons they share with our 10th graders through theater.”

  • Safety First! Happy Shins for Happy Soccer Players!

    Funded Dec 26, 2023

Thank you so much for your donations toward keeping our soccer players' shins safe! It is amazing how challenging it can be to find equipment that meets the safety requirements. Thankfully, because of your kindness, we will be able to supply all of our players with NOCSAE approved shin guards for the 2024 season. Without these, our players would not be allowed to participate in the NYC Public School Athletic League games. The cost of a pair of shin guards may not seem like much to some folks, but to our students, it means opening them up to the world of competitive soccer and team sports.

Thank you for your support of our student-athletes! Their shins thank you too!”

  • Laptop for Language Learning

    Funded Aug 2, 2023

While I will be the first to admit that I am spending less and less time with students on laptops in an effort to support their social and written growth, that doesn't mean laptops aren't an absolute necessity in our classrooms. This laptop has enabled us to be able to watch and record many videos together while also providing a more robust processing that I can use to share ideas with students on our Smartboard for the whole class.

Students are already more advanced with tech use than most adults and so the opportunity to have a Macintosh system where video creation is much more advanced is also incredibly helpful. Our students are in the process of developing the first online newsletter of the school year and this laptop is helping them as they consider design choices and multimedia options to use in their publication. Thank you so much for your support of this work!”

  • Flexible Seats = Flexible Learning

    Funded Sep 11, 2023

Thank you for supporting my students in having the resources to find their best learning spaces! Over the past two weeks students have been recording short videos of themselves in order to respond to prompts about the values that guide their lives. They have also been writing out scripts and then responding to each other in video format in order to practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English. As multilingual learners, this kind of practice is invaluable to the process of building their confidence in using English to communicate as well as getting to learn about each other to build a stronger community. Seeing students spread out across the halls and classrooms on their floor pads and resting their laptops on their lap desks may seem inconsequential. However, being given a little more space as they build the confidence to share in this new language, has been invaluable. Additionally, we have just started a new book and there is a real joy in seeing students huddled together in small groups on their floor pads reading and working together. Thank you for making this possible!”

  • Basic Needs = Basic Dignity for Our Neediest Students

    Funded Sep 20, 2023

With the chaos of flooding in Brooklyn just a few weeks ago, we have already seen the direct impact of your donations on our students. We were able to offer students fresh socks that day, and in the days following we were able to open the doors of our boutique to the many families who came to the school for a family night. During that time they were able to gather items without judgement, nor concern for cost. This is the beauty of the boutique and the beauty of the kindness you have all shared with our BIHS family. Thank you for your continued support of our immigrant community and for ensuring that they have the basic undergarments that help a person to feel the dignity that everyone deserves.”

  • Big Goals, Big Dreams

    Funded May 18, 2022

Thank you so much for providing us with the supplemental resources needed to really engage our soccer players in collaborative drills. Having new practice goals, soccer balls, and goalie gloves has allowed for our players to truly have the equipment required to master the skills for being more confident on and off the field. As you may know, equipment gets pretty beaten up year after year and the budgets for schools were slashed by our mayor this year so it has been tough. Through your donations we were able to replace some tattered equipment while also providing equipment we've always dreamed of having---which is truly a gift.”

  • Team Shirts Make the Dream Work!

    Funded Jun 8, 2022

Thank you so much for bringing a little extra team spirit to our girls this year. Our team numbers were small again this year, but many new players joined so having some extra activities to help build up the relationships between the newer players and the veteran players was SO helpful. The girls were surprised the Friday they showed up to practice and saw all of the materials for making the shirts. It was the perfect way to celebrate their hard work and they had a blast. Everyone was grateful for the time together building the foundation of joy that so vital to our programs.”

  • Banding Together=Team Goals

    Funded Sep 18, 2021

It started with headbands that were met with cheers and "oh wow they are black and white for our home AND away games!" Then the celebration continued when the girls came together to problem solve and assembled the new goals as a team-building exercise. Wow, do these gals know how to follow a set of directions! They were clapping together at the sight of their two fully-assembled goals within 30 minutes of starting! Finally, we come to today, a day that is a testament to what happens when a dedicated group of young people are offered the support they request.

Today was supposed to be our first game, but unfortunately last night it was canceled. These gals decided they weren't going to let this get them down. Instead, they brought their uniforms to practice, suited up, and played a little mini-game against each other using the new goals you all brought to them. We even had two alums of the team stop by the park to offer up cheers and a few pointers.

There was laughter, there was competition, there was learning, and most of all, sisterhood. Thank you for being a part of this team. We appreciate you.”

  • Books for ELLs Learning About Teen Social Experiences and Pressures

    Funded May 5, 2020

Thank you so much for supporting our students in having access to books and e-books that will hopefully help them to explore, and be more thoughtful about how they move about in this world. Being a teenager isn't easy, but I'm hoping that having a book or two that they can look to for a little help and empowerment while riding the roller coaster that is adolescence is a step in the right direction.

    We appreciate you!”

  • Continuing the Solidarity, Our International Soccer Team Continues to Grow!

    Funded Dec 25, 2018

As our team continues to grow, it is incredibly important for us to be able to build unity. One way we are able to do this is through our uniforms. Our players have expressed that having these warm ups were helpful in feeling more like a team, and feeling more confidence as they prepared for their games against other NYC teams.

We are grateful to share that our numbers continue to increase and so does our success on and off the field.

These girls are dedicated to the sport, but also dedicated to each other in a way that a coach only hopes to experience. They help each other with subway directions, they explain ideas in English and in their other languages to the newest members of our team, and they continue to show a level of sportspersonship that makes me incredibly proud to call myself a member of their coaching staff.

Thank you for continuing to help us build a positive environment for recent immigrants to explore the universal language of soccer!”

B.I.H.S. is a small school that exclusively serves recent immigrants who are learning English as a new language. Our cohorts are comprised of students from over thirty different countries making patience, team work, and empathy cornerstones of our community. Our project-based approach is focused on encouraging our ENL students to show what they know through multiple modalities. In my classroom these cornerstones build the foundation of our work together. Students are encouraged to explore the English language through music, reading, writing, speaking, performing, designing, and taking positive risks in their learning. We not only discuss characters, but we work on building character through a focus on developing the skills to engage in collaborative projects, the confidence to persevere through challenges, and the kindness to hear the ideas of others even when those ideas may be different from our own.
